Around the Farm

On our ten acres of meadow in the Gara Valley we have a small flock of pedigree Shetland sheep, bred for both wool and meat. They are great characters, and come in a number of different colours and markings. You may spot Rosie or James in the morning going out to feed them and check that they are all well. Ali, a particularly friendly seven year old mirk faced grey katmoget ewe, won first prize at the Mid Devon Show in 2002. The following year our senior ram, Horus, scooped first at the Devon County Show. These and other prizes are on display in the farmhouse kitchen. We are happy to introduce our guests and their children to the girls, who are always keen to munch an extra handful of sheep nuts! Lambing time is normally early April.

Our poultry consists of Blue Maran, Welsummer, Sussex Rock, Maran and Light Sussex hens, a small flock of little call ducks and a pair of Khaki Campbells. Courage Best, our colourful cockerel, has strict instructions not to crow before 8 a.m.

Their delicious free range eggs are available for sale, subject to production. James would be delighted to give you a tour of the "woodland trail" which is a short stroll by the stream through the copse and trees, full of bluebells in the spring.

You will sometimes be greeted on arrival by our friendly Irish Terrier, Nuala, who is particularly keen to ensure that everyone is made welcome. Colin the Cat, may deign to say hello, or perhaps not if there are some mice to be stalked in the hay bales.

History

Before the Norman Conquest Collaton was owned by the mother of King Harold II of England. In the seventeenth century the value of Collaton was put at just £50. More about the history of Lower Collaton Farm...

Produce

We have a selection of produce which is all 'home grown'. Our free range chicken and ducks lay very delicious eggs, however eggs are subject to laying!
